Tone :]

Definition: the feeling of a piece of poetry

Significance: express the poet’s attitude through words.

Examples:
Lover's Touch
Author: YankeeGurl
Thoughts as soft as velvet gently drift into my mind,
Reminiscent lover's touch, another place and time;
My body aches to hold you close,
my heart beats pure & fast,
I embrace the feel of your sweet taste,
to have you here at last.
Fingertips caressing as the passion starts to rise,
the love you're making to me shines softly through your eyes,
as I feel you deep within me & I'm lost in all your charms,
the only place my heart desires is the comfort of your arms...

Interpretation :]

Definition: The way in which someone explains or understands things

Significance: a process to make things clear.

Example:

Bonsai (Edith L. Tempo)

All that I love
I fold over once
And once again
And keep in a box
Or a slit in a hollow post
Or in my shoe.

All that I love?
Why, yes, but for the moment-
And for all time, both.
Something that folds and keeps easy,
Son's note or Dad's one gaudy tie,
A roto picture of a queen,
A blue Indian shawl, even
A money bill.

It's utter sublimation,
A feat, this heart's control
Moment to moment
To scale all love down
To a cupped hand's size

Till seashells are broken pieces
From God's own bright teeth,
And life and love are real
Things you can run and
Breathless hand over
To the merest child

.

Simile :]

Definition: A word or phrase that describe something by comparing it to something else using "as" or "like"

Significance: Help description of something by letting readers have a visual image about the idea the poet wants to express.

Example:

"Her lips were as red as a wailing firetruck."

Extended Metaphor :]

Definition: A way of continuing to compare two different things (metaphor) throughout the piece of poetry.

Significance: Help readers to follow the main idea of the poetry.

My life is like a river
Sometimes flowing lightly and gently
Moving along with ease
My life is like a river
Sometimes rough and rapid
Longing for some release
Trying to calm the storm
Waiting for the sun to shine overhead
Looking for the rainbow in the sky
My life is like a river
I like the gentle bends
I like the smooth waters
They bring me peace and joy
I do not like the rocks and currents
They are struggles in my life
I enjoy the nice peaceful waters
My life is like a river
Having ups and downs
Twists and turns
Trying to smooth them out

Stanza :]

I would go on adventures all over the world.

I enjoy seeing peace.

I am fast and fun.
I want to fly and taste the air.
I am not afraid to say what I want.
I feel such smooth things that touch my fingers.
I find such pretty things in nature.

I am fast and fun.
I want to be a soccer star.
I think hard about things.
I wonder where we go when we fade.
I feel so great when I help someone.

Significance: help the poet change from ideas to ideas

Imagery :]

Definition: use of words or pictures to describe ideas

Significance : The importance of imagery is you can imagine what the poetry is describing. Everyone thinks differently.  Your imagery will connect to your poem. It helps arouse readers’ imagination and helps the poetry or prose interesting and deeper in meaning

Example :

The winter evening settles down
With smell of steaks in passageways
Six o'clock.
The burnt-out ends of smoky days.
And now a gusty shower wraps
The grimy scraps
Of withered leaves about your feet
And newspapers from vacant lots;
The showers beat
On broken blinds and chimney-pots,
And at the corner of the street
A lonely cab-horse steams and stamps.
And then the lighting of the lamps.

Poetry :)

Definition:  a piece of writing in which the words are arranged in different lines.

Example:

 Thinking of you
By Sarah

You're the first thing I think of
Each morning when I rise
You're the last thing I think of
When I close my eyes

You're in each thought I have
And every breath I take
My feelings are growing stronger
With every move you make

You're an angel from above
who takes away my pain
My love for you is so strong
It's always just the same

Significance:  with rhymes, it is easy to come to readers’ minds and souls.
